JOYCE ADAMS, VAULTING INSTRUCTOR (THURS. EVENINGS)

Joyce, being the founder of Miles of Smiles, is our "senior" instructor.  She obtained her NARHA certification in 1997 after starting the program, and she was a riding lesson instructor for several years.  In 1999, Joyce learned about and became very interested in Vaulting (gymnastics on horseback).   After much research and training from other vaulting professionals, Joyce launched the Miles of Smiles vaulting class in 2000.  Her passion for the riders and horses is evident at any lesson.  With a lifelong love of horses and education as a profession, Joyce is a natural for this type of work!  She has a great touch with the kids, and it's amazing to watch how quickly they warm up to her and respond to her instructions.

ELLEN LYNN, THERAPEUTIC RIDING INSTRUCTOR (TUES. EVENINGS)

Ellen has also been involved with Miles of Smiles since the beginning, starting in 1997 as a volunteer and board member.  She obtained her NARHA certification in 2002.  Ellen has been active with horses her whole life.  Growing up in California, her family spent many hours on the California show circuit with their daughter showing in the hunter/jumper divisions.  Being a lifelong equestrienne, she brings an understanding and gentleness to her lessons that is very reassuring to the riders and horses alike.  To see her interact with her students, you would never guess that she is an compliance auditor by profession!

SARA BROWN, THERAPEUTIC RIDING INSTRUCTOR (MON. EVENINGS)

Sara is another well-known person around Miles of Smiles.  She obtained her NARHA certification in 2002, and has also been involved since the beginning of the program and has become our Program Manager.  Sara's lifelong love of horses and profession as an elementary teacher make her a wonderful therapeutic riding instructor! She is the mother of two wonderful children.

TIFFANY SCHMIDT, THERAPEUTIC RIDING INSTRUCTOR

Tiffany is relatively new to the program, but she has jumped right in, serving as the Stables Mgr. in 2004 and currently as a board member.  She is are newest Certified Instructor, having just earned her certification in June 2005!  Tiffany raises quarter horses and is an education professional, so she connects well with the horses & riders alike.  She has been assisting Joyce with the vaulting lessons.

JENNIFER STANDLEY, INSTRUCTOR-IN-TRAINING

Jennifer has been involved with Miles of Smiles for several years, particularly as Fundraising Co-Chair & serving on the board.  She is now working on earning her certification, and with her education background and friendly, outgoing nature, she quickly connects with her students.  As a mother of two and a preschool teacher and instructor with MOS she no longer has free time!

THERAPISTS

We are currently looking for a Physical Therapist and Occupational Therapist please let us know if you know of anyone that would be interested in joining the Miles of Smiles team.

The NARHA certifi-

cation process for therapeutic riding instructors is intense and comprehensive.

To obtain certification, potential instructors must complete many hours of training, pass a written examination, complete 25 hours of teaching under the guidance of a NARHA Certified Instructor, and demonstrate their own riding & horse-

manship abilities.

Finally, they must demonstrate their ability to instruct a class of at least two students with dis-

abilities, and they must obtain current CPR and First Aid certification.

To maintain their certification, NARHA instructors must maintain & update their CPR and First Aid certifications annually, as well as complete several hours of continuing education in equine or therapy-related subjects each year.
